Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how ReelSave ("we", "our", or "us") handles information when you use our mobile application (the "App").
TL;DR
- We do not require sign-up, login, or account creation — there is no user account, ever.
- We never collect your name, email, phone number, or Instagram credentials.
- Downloaded reels are saved to your device only — we never upload or host a copy of them.
- The App shows ads (Google AdMob). AdMob uses your device's advertising ID and an approximate location inferred from your IP address to show and measure ads. The App also sends anonymous usage data (an anonymous device ID, not your identity) to help us understand how the App is used.
- The App can send you optional push notifications, which you can turn off at any time in Settings.
1. Information We Do Not Collect
ReelSave does not require an account, so we never collect:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any other personal information.
- Your Instagram credentials, username, or password — you never log in to Instagram inside our app.
- The reels you save (we don't keep a copy on our servers).
- Your contacts, precise (GPS) location, microphone, camera, or SMS/call data. (Our ad partner, Google AdMob, may infer an approximate location from your IP address — see Section 5.)
- Your browsing history outside the app.
2. Information Stored Only on Your Device
The following information stays on your phone and is never transmitted to us:
- Your saved reels library — metadata of reels you've downloaded (caption, account handle, file size, timestamp). Stored in the app's local storage on your device.
- Your app settings — your quality preference, Wi-Fi-only toggle, etc. Stored locally.
- The downloaded files — videos and photos saved to your phone's Pictures folder under "ReelSave", and audio saved to your Music folder.
- Ringtone, alarm and notification sounds — if you choose to set a saved sound as one of these, the change is made on your phone only.
- Video wallpaper — if you set a saved reel as your wallpaper, a copy of that video is kept in the App's private storage and played on your phone only.
If you uninstall the App, its library and settings are removed from your device. Files you saved to your Gallery or Music folder stay on your phone until you delete them. There is no server-side copy of any of this.
3. Information Sent to Our Backend Service
When you tap "Download" on a link, ReelSave sends the public post/reel URL (Instagram, Facebook, or X/Twitter) to our backend service for resolution. Specifically:
- What we send: The link you provided (pasted, or shared into ReelSave from another app's Share menu), plus a quality preference (e.g., "1080p").
- What we receive: A direct video URL that we use to download the video to your device.
- What we store: The resolved link is briefly cached in memory (up to 1 hour) to speed up repeated requests. We do not log it long-term and do not associate it with your identity — we don't have your identity to associate it with.
- What we do not store: The video file itself, or any personally-identifying information from your phone.
Separately, to automatically tag your saved reel with a category (e.g. "Comedy", "Music") so it's easier to browse in your library, we send the post's caption, hashtags, and audio track name — never the video itself — to Google Gemini and, as a fallback, Groq (an AI inference provider). This text may briefly pass through their systems to return a category label. Neither receives your device ID or any way to identify you.
Our backend service runs on Firebase Cloud Functions (Google Cloud, asia-south1 region — Mumbai).
4. Anonymous Usage Analytics
The App generates a random identifier on your device (an "anonymous device ID") the first time you open it. This ID is not your name, email, phone number, or any other personal identifier — it's a random string, generated locally, that lets us count things like "how many downloads happened today" without knowing who you are.
Using this anonymous ID, we log:
- App opens, and download attempts/successes/failures (including which platform — Instagram, Facebook, or X — and, on failure, the error reason, to help us fix bugs).
- Which features you use — for example saving audio or photos, setting a ringtone or wallpaper, Play all, or sharing the App — and ad events such as an ad being shown, clicked, or a reward being earned.
- The App version you are running, and error codes when something fails (diagnostic information, used only to find and fix problems).
- If you enable notifications: your device's push token, the platforms you've downloaded from, and the last day you used the App — used only to decide whether and what to send you (see Section 6).
This data is stored in our Firebase/Firestore database, is never sold, and is never linked back to your name or any other personally-identifying information — because we never collect that information in the first place.
5. Advertising (Google AdMob)
ReelSave shows ads through Google AdMob to keep the App free, including optional rewarded ads you can choose to watch to unlock a feature. AdMob may collect and use your device's advertising ID and other technical identifiers, information about your interactions with ads, and diagnostic data to show and measure ads and to prevent fraud, per Google's own policies. AdMob may also infer your approximate location from your IP address to show relevant ads and prevent fraud. We do not choose what specific ads you see, and we do not receive any personal information from Google as part of this.
You can reset or opt out of ad personalization at the Android OS level: Settings → Privacy → Ads (wording varies by device/Android version).
Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. How Google uses data from AdMob specifically: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
6. Push Notifications (Optional)
The App may ask permission to send you push notifications — for example, a weekly summary of what you've saved, or a one-time note about platforms you haven't tried yet. This is entirely optional:
- You can deny the permission when asked, or later revoke it in your phone's system notification settings.
- You can also turn notifications off inside the App itself (More → Preferences → Reminders), independent of the OS permission.
- If you turn on "Shortcuts in notification bar" (More → Preferences), the App shows a notification with Play all and Download buttons. It is created on your phone; nothing is sent to us for it.
- We send at most one notification per week per device, and never anything beyond what's described above.
Notifications are delivered via Expo's push notification service, which relays them through Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging. Neither service receives any personal information — only the anonymous device identifier and push token described in Section 4.
7. Other Third-Party Services We Use
- Google Firebase / Google Cloud — hosts our backend and database. Google may log generic infrastructure metrics (request volume, error rates). Their privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter — when our backend resolves a link, it makes a request to that platform on your behalf, which the platform may log as it would any request to their site.
- RevenueCat — a subscription-management SDK is included in the App for a future optional Premium tier. As of this version, in-app purchases are not yet enabled, so no purchase or payment data is collected. This section will be updated when that changes.
We do not use Google Analytics, crash-reporting SDKs, or social media login providers.
8. Permissions We Request
The App requests the following Android permissions, and uses them only as stated:
- Internet access — to communicate with our backend resolver and download videos.
- Music and audio — to find audio you saved with ReelSave, for example to bring it back after reinstalling. The App does not request access to your photos or videos; it saves downloads to your gallery without reading it.
- Modify system settings — only if you choose to set a saved sound as your ringtone, alarm or notification sound. Android asks you to allow this in system settings.
- Network state — to detect whether you're on Wi-Fi when "Wi-Fi only" is enabled.
- Notifications — only if you grant it, to send the optional notifications described in Section 6.
- Advertising ID — used by Google AdMob as described in Section 5.
If you set a reel as your wallpaper, Android runs ReelSave's wallpaper service to play it. This does not require any permission from you.
We do not request access to your contacts, precise location, microphone, camera, calendar, SMS, or call logs.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you believe a child has used the App, please contact us and we will help confirm there is no personal data to delete.
10. Content Responsibility
ReelSave is a personal media tool. You are responsible for:
- Only downloading content you have the right to download (your own content, or publicly-licensed content).
- Respecting the Terms of Service of the platform you're downloading from, and the copyright of original creators.
- Using downloaded videos for personal viewing only — not for redistribution.
We do not host or distribute any content. We do not store downloaded videos on our servers.
11. Data Retention
- Resolved-link cache (backend): cleared automatically after 1 hour.
- Category cache (backend): the category we auto-assign to a link (e.g. "Comedy") is cached indefinitely, keyed to a one-way hash of the link, so repeat downloads of the same public post don't need a fresh AI lookup. This cache holds no personal information.
- Anonymous usage analytics (Section 4): retained indefinitely in aggregate to track app health and growth over time. Never linked to your identity.
- Push token / notification preferences (Section 6): kept only while notifications remain enabled on your device; removed if you disable notifications or uninstall the App.
- Server logs: Google Cloud / Firebase retains infrastructure logs for up to 30 days for diagnostic purposes. These do not contain personally-identifying information.
- Your data on the device: kept until you delete a reel, clear the cache, or uninstall the app.
12. Your Rights
Because we never collect your name, email, or any other personally-identifying information, there is no personal profile tied to you for us to access, modify, or delete. If you want to remove all ReelSave data associated with your device:
- Delete individual saves from the Downloads tab.
- Turn off notifications in More → Preferences → Reminders, or at the OS level — this also removes your push token from our systems.
- Reset or opt out of your advertising ID at the OS level to limit AdMob's ad personalization.
- Free up temporary files from the storage card at the top of More, when it offers to.
- Uninstall the App to remove everything stored on your device.
If you are in the European Union, United Kingdom, India, or any other jurisdiction with data-protection laws, the limited data described in this policy is processed on the legal basis of legitimate interest in operating and improving the App, and, where applicable, your consent (e.g. when you grant the notification permission).
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, when we add a new feature that changes what data the App collects. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the App after a revision constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
